3) Head East CD Reissue - Gettin' Lucky / Head East

Hip-O Select, a division of Universal Music Enterprises, reissued Head East's 3rd and 4th albums, Gettin' Lucky and Head East (self-titled) in CD format on 1 April 2005. The albums were re-issued as a "Twofer" with both albums being on one CD with 19 tracks and a running time of about 79 minutes. The CD is nicely packaged and contains all the images and lyrics that were included with the original albums, plus a couple previously unseen bonus images from the photo shoot used to promote the self-titled album in 1978. The CD is being sold exclusively through the Hip-O Select website at: www.hip-oselect.com, so you will not be able to purchase it through other online music retail websites or your local music store. Hip-O Select has indicated that they are pleased with sales so far and may consider reissuing more Head East albums in CD format if Gettin' Lucky / Head East continues to sell well.

During the month of May the Head East website is giving away 5 copies of the new Head East CD reissue of Gettin' Lucky / Head East in their Gettin' Lucky Contest. Five lucky Head East fans will each receive one copy of the CD. Five names will be drawn randomly from all entries received by 30 May 2005 and the winners will be notified by email by 1 June 2005. Fans who wish to enter the contest should visit the contest page and follow the instructions listed there. While at the contest page fans can also vote in a poll indicating which Head East albums they would most like to see released next. The results of the poll will be passed on to Universal Music Group and Hip-O Select, and will hopefully influence their decisions on future CD reissues of Head East Albums.

* please note that this contest ended 30 May 2005 and the contest page no longer exists on this site

4) Head East At The Movies - Sahara

The Head East song Never Been Any Reason was included in the film "Sahara" starring Penelope Cruz, Matthew McConaughey, and Steve Zahn. This major motion picture was released on 8 April 2005 and has been seen by millions of moviegoers since its release. The movie soundtrack CD which was released by Rykodisc on April 5th also includes Never Been Any Reason and 11 other great songs from bands including Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad, Dr. John, The Faces, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The soundtrack CD can be purchased online through the Rykodisc Website at www.rykodisc.com, or through most online music websites and retail music stores.

Head East songs have been used in movies on at least two other occasions. This is second time that Never Been Any Reason has been included in a major motion picture release, with the first time being the 1993 film Dazed and Confused. The song was also included in the Even More Dazed and Confused Soundtrack CD which was released in 1994. The movie and the CD soundtrack are available through most movie and music retail outlets.

The 1979 film J-Men Forever included two songs from Head East's self-titled 4th album (Man I Wanna Be and Get Up & Enjoy Yourself). This film parody by members of the Firesign Theatre comedy troop contains songs from several other aritst who were signed to the A&M Records label at the time. The film was originally released in VHS format and went out of print for several years before it was reissued in DVD format in 2002. The DVD is available through most online movie retailers (like Barnes & Nobles and Amazon.com). A soundtrack CD for the movie has never been issued.

5) Lyrics - The words to 'Dance Away Lover' from 'Head East (self-titled)'
© 1978 Almo Music Corp. / Zuckschank Music, Inc. (ASCAP)

Dance Away Lover
(Lyrics by John Schlitt)

Day and night - sittin' alone
Wonderin' where you've been goin'
In my mind I can see your face
And the love that I thought it was showin'

Didn't know it was all a mask
and my love wasted devotion
Now I'm here and you're somewhere else
Dancin' with another's emotion, another's emotion

I remember the night you captured my soul
And the mind of my own, I lost all control
I knew I had seen you before
In so many of my dreams

Like the dreams you danced away
Leaving only visions for me
Of the dance away
Dance away lover

Leading me on every step of the way
You called the tune and you used it well
You danced away and you left me here
Oh dance away, dance away lover, lover, lover - dance away

*** Instrumental Break ***

Day and night I'm sittin' alone
I'm wonderin' where you've been goin'
In my mind I can see your face
And the love that I thought it was showin'

I didn't know it was all a mask
and my love wasted devotion
Now I'm here and you're somewhere else
Dancin' with another's emotion

Dance away, dance away lover
Carrying on every step of the way
You called the tune and you used it well
You danced away and you left me here
Oh dance away, dance away lover, lover, lover - dance away

6) Head East T-Shirts - Commemorating 30 Years Of Flat As A Pancake

New Head East T-Shirts commemorating the 30 year anniversary of Head East's first album, Flat as a Pancake, are now available in white and gray in sizes large through 2x. The shirts, which were first sold on the merchandise page of this site in March of this year, will also be available in limited quantities at Head East concerts beginning Memorial Day weekend. They feature a full back design (similar to the image shown to the left), and a small heartcrest design on the front of the shirts that is a variation of the back design.

Flat as a Pancake is Head East's biggest selling album and is considered by many to be one of the greatest debut albums of all time by a classic rock band. The album, which was released in 1975, features the hits "Love Me Tonight" and "Never Been Any Reason", and several fan favorites to include "City of Gold / Fly By Night Lady" and "Jefftown Creek". The shirts are only expected to be available during 2005 and will be printed in limited quantities, so be sure to get your "30 Years of Flat" T-Shirts soon before they go out of print.

7) Mail - stories and comments from Head East fans.

A military member stationed in southern California writes - "I remember, it was my first concert. I was a teenager and worked for KQHU FM a small radio station in Yankton, South Dakota. The station hosted a concert by Head East in the late 70's. Mr. Boyd and the gang rocked the whole sleepy town. It was absolutely phenomenal. I have since given up being a DJ and have spent nearly the last 27 years in the military. Now as I near the end of my military career, I often I wonder what it would be like to return to spinning discs with classics of the likes of Head-East. I just wanted to say that it was an awesome experience to meet all the members of the band and be a part of rock and roll history. Thank you!"
