Steve Huston with The TimeAtions at the 1968 Illinois State Fair Battle of the Bands |
|
Biographical Sketch: Steve Huston was born in Centralia, Illinois on 17 November 1949, which makes him a Scorpio and 57 years old in 2006. Steve says, "I can't believe that is my true age, I still feel like I'm in my 30's." Most of Steve's educational pursuits occurred after leaving Head East and he holds a Master's Degree from Goddard College in Vermont and a Post Graduate Degree from the University of London in Great Britain. After a decade of being Chief Engineer at several different recording studios, Steve has been teaching audio at the collegiate level for the past 12 years at the Art Institute of Houston in Texas. He likes to point out that he has been recruited by both the University of Houston and Houston Community College, but likes the Art Institute of Houston and plans to stay there for the foreseeable future.
During the band's run, Steve lived across the river in the city of St. Louis proper, as well as in the suburbs of Ballwin and Ellisville. For a periiod of time, Steve had an apartment in Los Angeles but didn't like LA living. "too nuts, too crazy," he says, "even for Rock Stars."
Steve is a founding member of the TimeAtions (which became Head East in 1969), but left after the first few years to continue his education. He returned in 1972 and stayed throughout the entire A&M Records period, and one album (Onward and Upward) on Allegiance Records. He says he stayed after the line-up of Boyd, Somerville, Schlitt, Birney, & Huston broke up in 1980 because he still believed in the music. Somerville, Schlitt, and Birney left but Steve and Roger Boyd fought on assembling a new Head East with Tony Gross, Mark Boatman, and former member Dan Odum. Huston finally retired from the band in 1983.
From time to time, Steve surfaces where Head East is performing and plays and sings with the band. "It's very different, because it's not my idea of Head East", Steve says, "but it's still great fun and a lot of those songs are my songs and I still like to sing them."
