Leader of the Band Notes

( From Roger Boyd )

Head East appeared for the first time in several years in northern Indiana on Saturday June 11. Mike and Leila Brandt, Chappie, and Brittany gave us a warm welcome to their new Harley Davidson dealership in Marion, Indiana. My interview with Randy Rankin of the MAXX radio station helped draw a large crowd of enthusiastic fans.

We had a brief downpour early in the set that made the stage slippery and Greg Manahan took a hard fall. Typical musician, he said “at least my guitar wasn’t hurt.” Never mind the headache he had from banging the back of his head! The rest of the show went on without a hitch. The fans were great sports and didn’t seem at all discouraged by the downpour. The new songs on our “One Night with Head East” CD were big crowd pleasers and once again Darren’s new song, “Say Yeah!” was well received. The crowd was more than happy to participate and chime in with YEAH at key moments in the song.

It was great to see webmaster Drew and wife Patty from Radcliff, KY as well as Tom Cullen (TC) all the way down from Chicago; it’s not often enough we can get together with the three of them at the same show. TC once again shot some excellent photos which Drew will have posted for all to view (see above). We also had a blast visiting with some devout fans we hadn’t seen in some time, including fans from Lafayette and Indianapolis. Our longest time fan, Marvin Graddy from Greenfield, Indiana, also was at the show. Marvin likes to tell the story about the time he hitchhiked to see the band in 1969 when he was 13 years old, even before we officially became Head East. I was frantic to say the least, and put him on a bus back home after the show.

I’m am currently in the studio in New Orleans completing the final edits and flying in the new mixes on our DVDs for Prisoner and One Night and trailers will be available for viewing (if not the entire videos) in time to celebrate the 4th!
