Leader of the Band Notes

( From Roger Boyd )

To get things started on this edition of the “Leader of the Band” notes, I would like to extend the first of several apologies (the other will be for the show in Flandreau, SD) to all our HE fans for being tardy in my duties. It has been an extremely difficult month in both the music and personal arenas and in continuing to deal with all the various issues I have gotten behind.

I have finally returned home for a few days from a wonderful show in Lewiston, Idaho and an extended visit with my sister Janet, nieces Kate and Sara, and nephew Josh. With them living in Spokane, WA we never have an opportunity to spend as much time together as we would like. Jan came down to the “Too Broke for Sturgis” show in Lewiston and assisted Rita with the merch—she had a “fantastic time and loved the new songs!” The Lewiston audience loved them as well with Darren’s “Say Yeah” getting its best reception to date.

As usual new tunes “One Night,” “Prisoner” and “Me and My Whiskey” were enthusiastically received by the crowd along with our more familiar songs from previous albums. It was wonderful to have so many fans come up and talk about our first trip to Lewiston in 1976, which was at Lewis and Clark State College, and was as the band was rocketing to national prominence with Flat as a Pancake. We have only been to Lewiston one other time between that first show and this past weekend and we’ll make sure to not make our return so long—everyone was fantastic and the band had a wonderful time—especially “pieing” Glen on his 46th birthday. Greg planted the whipped cream “pie” right on target as we were taking our encore bow!

I would especially like to extend my thanks to Dale Sullivan at Z-Rock (the classic rock station in Lewiston) for his exceptional interview and to Jennifer Bauer for her wonderful article in the Lewiston Tribune. Also, a big thanks to Bob Thorson and all his Pepperland Music staff, and the sound and light folks, for a “job well done” in putting on the show. Gary, who mixed us from the front of the house, said he never dreamed that “when he first heard us at the 1976 LCSC show at the age of 12 he would one day be mixing sound for HE!”

Last but not least, Drew has done an excellent job of trying to keep everyone informed on the progress toward the official release of One Night with Head East. I know many of you have kept wondering why it has gotten pushed back so many times, even though it has been extremely frustrating for fans, Drew and the band. Unfortunately, in my 40 plus years in the music business, this is nothing new. However, the album is finally available on iTunes (as well as at our shows) and will be available on all the download sites within the next 3-4 weeks. We hope you all will love it just as you have our many other albums. I would like to add we are well along our way to finishing a studio album that will include all of our brand new songs and will be working extremely hard to insure it is available by the first of the year.

Finally, we will be in Rothschild, WI on August 13 for the Breanna’s Smile Foundation fundraiser. Glen has written a beautiful song in Breanna’s memory. We once again look forward to seeing Craig, Jill and all the foundation folks as well as all our wonderful central Wisconsin fans. We need a huge turnout to help raise money for a worthy cause in memory of a wonderful young lady who was taken from us far too early in life.
